about

In 1981, composer, sound artist and frequent studio collaborator Casimira Takács was contacted by the Hanari-Yoshimura Air-Quality Engineering Laboratories regarding the commissioning of a corporate soundtrack experiment -- what management described as "discreet music for mood enrichment".

The company's main complex, built in an isolated mountainous region outside of Wakkanai, Hokkaido, was the full-time home of some 400 employees and their families; with in-house cafeteria, health, education, and entertainment facilities, Hanari-Yoshimura sought both to eliminate the need for commuting and to engender the company-as-family mentality. That this setup also facilitated the rather stringent clean room policies required by their research and development was, of course, an additional benefit. Takács visited the lab for nine days in early January 1982, touring the self-contained facility, meeting with the board and workers, conducting acoustic studies, and taking photos. Upon returning, she emerged after a month in the studio with Hanari-Yoshimura Atmospherics: four pieces representing the full course of an idealized day at the complex.

Unfortunately, Takács' work was never used for its intended purpose: Hanari-Yoshimura declared bankruptcy in March 1982, and its Hokkaido campus was shuttered permanently shortly afterward. Due to contract complexities around the recordings, Atmospherics languished for years, until Superspectrum Music Library was able to secure the rights. The Library is very pleased to release this interesting recording on the 40th anniversary of its creation.
